UTM parameters for Google Ads

If Google Ads is linked to GA4, keep auto-tagging (gclid) on: it gives the richest data. Add UTM tags when you also report in other tools, or for clients whose GA4 isn't linked.

The template

utm_sourcegoogle

The search engine. GA4 expects google for Paid Search.

utm_mediumcpc

Puts the clicks in GA4's Paid Search channel.

utm_campaign{campaignid}

ValueTrack fills in the campaign ID; swap for a readable name if you prefer.

utm_content{adgroupid}

The ad group, for comparing themes.

utm_term{keyword}

The keyword that matched the search.

In GA4 these clicks show up as Paid Search.With auto-tagging on, GA4 uses gclid and Google Ads data first; your UTM tags still help other tools.

Tips

  • Put the template in the account-level Tracking template or Final URL suffix, so every ad gets it.
  • Use {keyword} in utm_term to see which search terms bring clicks that buy.
  • Don't turn auto-tagging off just to use UTMs; the two work together.

Common mistakes

  • utm_medium=ppc on some campaigns and cpc on others: pick one and stick to it.
  • Adding UTMs to the final URL itself, which can break ad approval or landing page caching.
