Why links in Instagram and YouTube lose people — and how app links fix it

Tap a link inside Instagram and you land in a browser where you're logged in to nothing. Here's why that loses people, and how app links help.

When someone taps a link inside Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn or many other apps, it usually doesn't open in their normal browser. It opens in an in-app browser — a small browser built into the app they're already using.

What goes wrong in an in-app browser

  • It doesn't share logins with the person's main browser or with other apps.
  • A YouTube link opens the mobile website, not the YouTube app, so subscribing means logging in first.
  • An Instagram profile link opens a web page that often asks the visitor to log in before they can follow.
  • Saved passwords and payment details from the main browser usually aren't there.

Each of those is a small extra step. Small extra steps are exactly where people give up and go back to scrolling.

What a smart app link does

A smart app link (sometimes called a deep link) detects what kind of link it is — a YouTube video, an Instagram reel, a Spotify track — and on phones tries to open it in the matching app, where the person is already logged in. On desktop, or if the app isn't installed, it falls back to the normal web page.

Where it helps most

  • Creators linking a new video or reel from another platform's bio.
  • Podcasters and musicians sharing Spotify links.
  • Brands sending people to an Instagram profile or a product on Amazon or Flipkart.
  • Anyone sharing links in WhatsApp groups, where taps open inside WhatsApp.

Use a separate short link per platform you post on, so you can see where taps actually come from.

How to set it up in Stackly

Paste a YouTube, Instagram, Spotify, X, LinkedIn, Telegram, Amazon or Flipkart link when you shorten it. Stackly recognises the platform automatically and the short link opens the app on phones. Your click analytics also show how much traffic came from in-app browsers like Instagram and WhatsApp, so you can see the effect.
